Curriculum

Learner Attributes:
Our localised curriculum is based on four cornerstones; Kia Kaha (Be strong), Kia Whai Whakaaro (Be a thinker), Kia Manaaki (Be good to others), and Kia Pākiki (Be curious). The learner attributes underpin our curriculum and link to our whakatauki Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu. As ākonga journey through school, learning and experiences they gain feathers allowing them to fly into lifelong learning.

As a school we:

  • Place considerable emphasis on literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (mathematics)

  • Provide a broad, rich and stimulating curriculum that engages students

  • Offer an inquiry-based curriculum

  • Strive for equity and excellence in the achievement of students

  • Support our students to become self-directed, motivated and successful

  • Believe in our students being active and actively involved in their learning

  • Have a strong house, whanau and buddy network within the school which encourages healthy competition and support for new enrolments

  • Enrich our students learning through the authentic use of e-learning, with 1-1 in years 6-8

  • Te Reo & Tikanga are taught in all classrooms, so all students develop their ability to live successfully within a bicultural community

  • Special Education Needs Co-ordinators (SENCO) support learning with special needs programmes

  • An Enrichment teacher supports students with learning difficulties, SLD's and early intervention programmes as well as providing extension programmes.

Our students participate in a range of interschool sporting and cultural events throughout the year including Swimming, Tabloids, Rugby, Ripper Rubgy, Kapa Haka, Dance, Gymnastics and speech competitions.

Blended Learning:

At Twyford School, we believe students benefit most by experiencing a blend of learning that involves both digital learning and hands-on learning experiences.  The key is that the students and teachers need to have the flexibility to select the most appropriate tool (chromebook, ipad, pen and paper or other equipment.)  This sort of learning environment is more engaging for students and allows them to take ownership of the choices they make.  This type of learning also allows for more personalised instruction ensuring all student's needs are being met.  Most importantly a blended learning environment reflects the world in which we currently live, socialise and work.
